Author Interview – Brian Cormack Carr

What book should everybody read at least once? The Tao Te Ching.  It’s a Chinese classic text which touches on the philosophical and religious meaning of life, and yet which is basically non-denominational. The Tao means “the way”. The book begins with the words “The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao. The name that can be named is not the eternal name”, so you know it’s going to be good.  It’s mind-bending and deeply comforting all at once.  That’s a combination of feelings everyone should feel at some point.

What do you hope your obituary will say about you? “He cared, he helped, he wrote a good sentence.”

Location and life experiences can really influence writing, tell us where you grew up and where you now live?

I grew up in Carnoustie, on the north-east coast of Scotland.  It’s a lovely part of the country – seaside and golf-course on one side, rolling farmland on the other.  I moved down south to start work with Marks & Spencer plc as a trainee manager in the mid 90s.  My parents and family still live in Carnoustie, so I go back regularly and appreciate it all the more for being absent for much of the time.  I love the personality of the people from the north east.  There’s a no-nonsense kindness combined with a kind of pithy resignation to the harder aspects of life.  They tend not to suffer fools gladly, and no wonder; life wasn’t easy for the people who originally settled on that coast – which can be pretty weather-beaten – or who worked in the fishing, farming and jute industries that sprung up in the area.  I do sometimes feel like a bit of a changeling.  I tend to be a bit more upbeat than you might expect, having come from those parts.  I’m sure some of my contemporaries must think I’m a bit new age flakey.  The fact that my first book is a self-help book probably doesn’t do much to assuage that impression!

How did you develop your writing? By doing it and by participating in learning experiences where possible.  At the moment, my published writing (and blog writing) centres on non-fiction and I find that fairly easy to do on a regular basis, but I’ve always found that I’m inspired to write fiction when I’m given some structure and parameters to work within.  I’ve been part of a couple of creative writing groups in  my time, and I’m always amazed at how inspiring they are. They really help me to find things to write about.
